Born in 1939 in Dresden, Volker Braun has lived in Berlin for many years. He has published plays, prose works, and poetry collections, most recently Lustgarten, Preußen (1996) and Tumulus (1999). His numerous awards include the prestigious Büchner Prize (2000):

"The Academy has never made a better decision in the past few years. ... Volker Braun is one of the few authors from Socialist Germany who has not only been able to cope with the political changes after 1989, but who has actually grown with them."
