New German Writers of the Twentieth-First Century

= 17-19 September 2009 (in conjunction with a workshop on: The German-Language Novel since 1990)

= Organised by Lyn Marven (Liverpool) and Stuart Taberner (Leeds)

Aft= er the international success in the 1990s of authors such as Bernhard Schlink, Mar= cel Beyer and Thomas Brussig, there is now an impressive number of emerging German-language writers who have already begun to make a significant impact. Some of these authors have already achieved international recognition in translation (for example, Karen Duve, Daniel Kehlmann, and Saša Stanišić); some have already won major prizes (for example, Julia Franck); others are truly ‘emerging authors’ selected here for the quality of their writing and attention they have already attra= cted (for example, Clemens Meyer, Alina Bronsky and Ilja Trojanow). Between them they represent a range of literat= ures in German, from the phenomenon of ‘chick lit’ to minority writi= ng (from Turkish immigrants and Eastern Europe), to ‘pop literature̵= 7; and perspectives on the former GDR as well as Germany’s Nazi past.
