This painting manages to capture all the aspects of German post war society. The Central panel depicts the evidence of post inflation prosperity and the image of the famous German "Golden Twenties" where the influence of dance and American jazz has taken over, whereas the two side panels depict the contrasting realities of parts of society on the same night. The left panel is the poor end of town and portrays Dix as a war cripple heckling at passing prostitutes. The right panel shows the 'classier' prostitutes looking for business in an obviously richer part of town as the architecture is very elaborate, although the homeless war cripple is still to be seen.
