YEAR ABROAD PHOTO COMPETITION 2008-2009

JOINT WINNERS: KATHERINE CLARKE AND MARTIN SHILLITO

March 2009: Congratulations to Katherine Clarke and Martin Shillito who have been selected as joint winners of this year’s photo competition with the theme ‘Only in Germany / Austria / Switzerland…’. The entries were judged by Professor Paul Cooke, Dr Ingo Cornils and Dr Jane Wilkinson, who agreed that Katherine’s and Martin’s photographs successfully captured very different aspects of contemporary Germany.

Katherine’s beautiful, abstract image of empty ‘Strandkörbe’ on Travemünde’s sunny but deserted northern beach, contrasts sharply with Martin’s clever, sobering image of Leipzig graffiti expressing continuing German-German problems.

Katherine and Martin will each receive a prize of £25 from the Department of German Russian and Slavonic Studies.

Many thanks to all finalists who entered their images of Germany, Austria and Switzerland to the competition – there were some excellent photographs to choose from.
